Course Grade Calculator
Compute your current course grade from weighted categories like homework, quizzes, tests, and papers. Add an optional target and final exam weight to see the exact score you need on the final, with a flag for impossible targets.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Course Grade Calculator
How does this course grade calculator work?
Each category contributes weightPercent times currentScorePercent divided by 100 to your overall grade. The calculator sums those contributions, divides by the total weight you entered, and multiplies by 100 to get a current grade percentage on the 0 to 100 scale. Dividing by your entered weight (not always 100) means a partial syllabus, for example a class where the final exam has not been included yet, still returns a fair mid-semester estimate.
What score do I need on the final exam to hit my target grade?
Provide a target overall grade and the final exam's weight, and the calculator solves (target minus current weighted sum) divided by finalExamWeightPercent, times 100. The result is the minimum percentage you need on the final to finish at your target. If the calculator flags the result as impossible, the required score is above 100% (not reachable without extra credit), so you need to either lower the target or look for bonus opportunities.
Do my category weights need to sum to exactly 100%?
Not while the term is in progress. The calculator divides by whatever total weight you enter, so 35% of weight allocated produces a sensible mid-semester estimate. The exception is when you ask for the score needed on the final. In that case, the combined category weight plus the final exam weight must equal 100%. Otherwise part of the final grade is unaccounted for or double-counted, so the calculator rejects the inputs and you should re-check your syllabus.
Which letter grade scale does this use?
The calculator uses one common plus/minus mapping, with A+ at 97%, A at 93%, A- at 90%, and the pattern continuing to D- at 60%. Below 60% is F. These are internal cutoffs, not a standard US scale. Use the boundaries in your syllabus for an official grade.
Can I use this for a class with extra credit or a curved grade?
The category scores accept 0 to 100, so this calculator does not model a category score above 100% or an extra-credit rule directly. Use an instructor-provided adjusted category score only when it remains within that range. Otherwise, treat the result as a baseline and apply the instructor's stated bonus separately. For curved classes, enter the adjusted scores after the curve is applied; the calculator does not create a curve.
