Frequently Asked Questions about the Discount Calculator

How do I calculate a percentage discount?
Multiply the original price by the discount percent divided by 100, then subtract that amount from the original price. For 25% off $80: discount amount = 80 x 0.25 = $20, so the final price is $80 - $20 = $60. The calculator uses this same formula and rounds all results to the nearest cent.
Is 30% off a good discount?
For full-price retail, yes. 30% off is a common sale depth and the mark many bargain hunters treat as the point where a purchase becomes worthwhile, though deep clearance often runs 50% or more. Whether it is "good" also depends on the base price: 30% off $200 saves you $60, while 30% off $15 saves only $4.50.
How do I find the original price from the sale price?
Divide the sale price by (1 - discount / 100). If an item is $42 after 30% off: original = 42 / (1 - 0.30) = 42 / 0.70 = $60. The calculator's find-original-price mode uses this exact formula, and it rejects a 100% discount because that would divide by zero.
What is the difference between a markdown and a discount?
The math is identical, since both reduce what you pay. In retail, "markdown" usually means a permanent price cut recorded in inventory, while "discount" often refers to a temporary promotion or coupon code. Either way, the savings formula is the same: savings = original price x (discount / 100).
How do I stack two discounts?
Apply them one at a time, not by adding the percentages. 20% off followed by 10% off is not 30% off, it is 28% off. On a $100 item: the first discount gives $80, then 10% of $80 is $8 off, leaving $72. To verify, run a second pass through the calculator using $80 as the new original price.
