Frequently Asked Questions about the Dog Age Calculator

Why is the old multiply-by-seven rule wrong?
The 7x rule assumes dogs and humans age at a fixed ratio, but that is not how dog aging works. A one-year-old dog is already roughly 15 in human years (far past what 7 would suggest), and a two-year-old is about 24. After that, aging slows considerably. The multiplier overstates young dogs and understates older ones.
Does breed or size really change a dog's age?
Yes, significantly. The calculator uses four size brackets (small under 20 lb, medium 20-50 lb, large 50-90 lb, and giant over 90 lb), each with a different per-year rate after age two: 4 human years per calendar year for small dogs, 5 for medium, 6 for large, and 7 for giant. A 10-year-old small dog is roughly 56 in human years; a 10-year-old giant-breed dog is roughly 80.
What is the UC Davis epigenetic formula?
Researchers at UC Davis (Wang et al., 2019) mapped DNA methylation changes in Labrador Retrievers and derived the equation human age = 16 x ln(dog age) + 31. The natural log captures the rapid aging burst in the first year or two and the slower rate afterward. The calculator applies it only for dogs one year old or older, and only for comparison, since the recommended result uses the AKC-based size-adjusted method. The epigenetic formula was calibrated on a single breed, so treat it as an estimate.
What is the oldest dog ever recorded?
Bluey, an Australian Cattle Dog, lived 29 years and 5 months and remains the recognized Guinness record holder. Guinness withdrew Bobi's former record in 2024 after its review found insufficient evidence for the claimed age. Exceptional records should not be used to predict an individual dog's lifespan.
What life stage is my dog in?
Vets typically divide a dog's life into puppy (0-1 year), young adult (1-3 years), mature adult (3-6 years for large and giant breeds, up to 9 for small ones), senior (the final quarter of expected lifespan), and geriatric (past typical lifespan). Because small breeds live longer, they enter senior status later, often around 10-11, while giant breeds may be considered senior by 6-7.
