What is the difference between Level 1, Level 2, and DC fast charging?
Level 1 charging uses 120 V AC, Level 2 uses 240 V AC through compatible equipment, and DC fast charging supplies DC directly to the battery pack. This calculator models fixed planning powers of 1.4 kW, 7.2 kW, or the selected DC nameplate tier. Actual charging power, added range, and session time depend on the vehicle, charge equipment, battery temperature, state of charge, and site limits.
Why is charging at home 2 to 3 times cheaper than DC fast?
Home and public charging prices vary by utility, tariff, network, location, membership, taxes, and time. Enter the all-in rate from your electric bill for home charging and the displayed session price for public charging. The calculator models energy cost only. It does not include charging-network fees, subscription charges, parking, or demand charges.
Why does charging slow down above 80 percent state of charge?
DC charging commonly tapers as battery state of charge rises or the pack is too cold or hot. The exact curve is specific to the vehicle, battery condition, charger, and route plan. This calculator uses the selected nameplate power for planning and does not model taper, so its time estimate can be optimistic for high state-of-charge sessions.
What is a typical US home electricity rate?
Use the all-in per-kWh amount from a recent bill, including supply, delivery, taxes, and any time-of-use period you expect to use. Published state or national averages can be far from a household's marginal charging price. Check the utility's current tariff before relying on an overnight or EV-specific rate.
How much does an EV add to my monthly power bill?
Estimate monthly charging energy as miles driven divided by the vehicle's measured miles per kWh, then account for charging losses.
