Hours to Decimal Converter

Payroll and timesheet systems commonly use decimal hours because an hourly rate multiplies directly against the value. For example, 7 hours 30 minutes is 7.5 hours, and at $20 per hour that is $150 before deductions. Check the format required by your own system.

Divide the minutes by 60. That is the whole rule. 15 minutes is 15 divided by 60, which is 0.25. 30 minutes is 0.5. 45 minutes is 0.75. 10 minutes is about 0.17. So 8 hours 15 minutes becomes 8.25 hours, 8 hours 30 minutes becomes 8.5 hours, and 8 hours 45 minutes becomes 8.75 hours. The calculator does this conversion in both directions.

Because minutes count to 60, not 100. When you add 6:45 plus 2:30 in your head you have to track two carries: the 45 plus 30 overflows past 60, so you carry one hour and keep 15 minutes, then add the hours to get 9:15. Spreadsheets and calculators do not handle that natively unless you store the value as a true time type. Converting to decimal hours sidesteps the carry entirely and lets you use ordinary addition, subtraction, and multiplication.

Employers may round clock punches in fixed increments. Federal guidance permits rounding only when, over time, it does not keep employees from receiving pay for all time worked. This calculator converts the values you enter. It does not apply a payroll rounding policy. Follow your employer's policy and applicable state law.

Use the decimal precision required by the destination. This calculator rounds HH:MM to 0 through 4 decimal places. In the reverse direction it rounds to the nearest minute by default, or to the nearest second when that option is on. Convert once from the original clock time instead of repeatedly rounding.
