Frequently Asked Questions about the IB Score Calculator
How is the total IB Diploma score calculated?
You add the grades from your six subjects, each scored 1 to 7, for a maximum of 42 points. Then you add up to 3 bonus points from the Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay matrix. The two parts together give a total out of 45 points.
How do the TOK and Extended Essay bonus points work?
Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay are each graded with a letter from A (highest) to E (lowest). The official IBO matrix combines the two letters into 0, 1, 2, or 3 bonus points. For example, an A in one and a B in the other gives 3 points, while two C grades give 1 point.
What score do you need to pass the IB Diploma?
You need at least 24 points out of 45 to be awarded the diploma, on top of meeting the core requirements. This calculator flags whether your total reaches 24 and shows how many points you sit above or below that line.
Why might a high total still fail the diploma?
Points alone do not guarantee the diploma. A grade of E in Theory of Knowledge or the Extended Essay, a grade of 1 in any subject, more than two grades of 2, or more than three grades of 3 or below are all failing conditions. The calculator checks these listed grade conditions, but its result cannot verify the diploma because it does not record the higher-level or standard-level allocation or CAS completion.
Does this calculator check every diploma requirement?
No. It does not collect each subject's higher-level or standard-level designation, so it cannot verify the official subject-level conditions. It also cannot check CAS or requirements outside the entered grades. Confirm the full award conditions with your IB coordinator.
