Frequently Asked Questions about the Weighted GPA Calculator

What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
Unweighted GPA uses a fixed 4.0 scale: A = 4.0, B = 3.0, etc. Weighted GPA adds bonus points for harder classes: typically +0.5 for Honors, +1.0 for AP/IB. An A in AP Calculus counts as 5.0 on the weighted scale but 4.0 on the unweighted.
How do colleges use weighted GPA?
It varies. Many recalculate to their own scale anyway. Selective colleges look at unweighted GPA plus course rigor (number of AP/IB/Honors taken). State universities often use the school's reported weighted GPA. Always check the schools you are applying to.
What boost do AP and IB classes get?
This calculator uses fixed bonuses of +1.0 for AP and IB and +0.5 for Honors, with no bonus for an F. School policies vary in course eligibility, bonus size, grade restrictions, and GPA cap. The calculator does not let you customize those bonus values, so verify that they match your school.
How do credit hours factor in?
GPA is credit-hour weighted. A 4-credit AP class with an A counts more toward GPA than a 1-credit elective with an A. The calculator multiplies each course's grade points by its credits, sums, and divides by total credits.
Is a higher weighted GPA always better?
Not as a cross-school comparison. Weighted scales, eligible courses, and caps differ, so a 4.5 at one school may not be calculated like a 4.5 at another. The calculator shows both results under its fixed rules. Use the transcript and course record for an official comparison.
